Michelle Zalaznick, OD

Recently, there is a lot of talk about the harmful effects of exposure to high energy blue light. High energy blue light can be found in cool white flourescent tubes, computers, smart phones and televisions.
Some of  the long term effects of this light Include damage to the retina, formation of cataracts and skin cancer. These effects are cumulative over time. People who are exposed to excessive blue light may complain of headaches and eye irritation. New lenses and tints have been developed to limit exposure to these harmful rays. People who have had cataract surgery  and who have macular degeneration are at high risk for the dangers of high energy blue light and should be wearing protection in their eyewear.
