20/20 Vision? Why you still need an Eye Exam

Meghan Schiffer, OD

20/20 Vision Approach

Some of my friends and family boast about their “20/20 vision” without glasses! As an optometrist, it’s not uncommon for me to hear all about a person’s vision issues… even outside of the exam room.

Here are some of the more common descriptions:

“I never needed glasses… until I turned 40. Now I need reading glasses.”

–          Yes, this one can be a bummer. But, we’ll all be there someday!

“I’m practically blind without my glasses! I have the worst prescription you’ve ever seen.”

–          Honestly, I’ve probably seen worse, but I get what you’re saying.

“My eyes have gotten so much worse since using the computer and smart phone all day.”

–          We’ve all experienced this! Have you read the blog about our protective BluTech lenses?? Let us recommend the best computer lens for your lifestyle.

But, the line that concerns me the most is: “I have great vision! I can see fine without glasses, so I don’t need to go to the eye doctor.”

–          Well, I’ll admit that I am jealous of your clear vision without glasses or contacts… but that statement is incorrect. So I’m going to tell you all the reasons you STILL need an eye exam.

Importance of Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye examination with an optometrist includes more than just a check of visual acuity. The examination begins with a detailed history. Many systemic diseases and certain medications can have an effect on the health of your eyes. Believe it or not, some diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes can even be detected FIRST by your eye doctor. Aside from checking for a spectacle prescription, your optometrist will also evaluate eye focusing, eye teaming, and eye movement. Based on each patient’s history and exam findings, the doctor can also determine whether additional testing or a referral to another health care provider is needed.

Read a case study on how 20/20 vision does not guarantee eye health and how an eye exam saved a patient’s life.

The moral of the story: Your eyes need an ocular wellness checkup whether you wear glasses or not!
