Are you extending the wear of your contact lenses?
I recently had a patient who complained that her contact lenses would bother her after only few hours or wear. She was confused why this happened, especially since she only wore her contact lenses for sports and special events.
I proceeded to ask her questions about her contact lens habits. One question after another, I asked – “How often do you replace your contact lenses?” She answered, “Well, since I wear two week lenses, I throw them out after I wear them about 14 times.”
Did you know that the life of the contact lenses starts the day you open the little blister package? It doesn’t matter how many times you wear the two week contact lens within the two weeks. It’s time to throw them out after 14 days even if you only wore them 2-3 times. It’s actually not a good idea to store the contact lenses in a case for too long – it can easily be infected by bacteria and cause a lot of irritation, and possibly very painful infections.
The best option for all contact lens wearers, whether you wear them occasionally or every day, is daily disposable contact lenses. This way you are putting a fresh, clean contact lens in your eye every time you wear them, and there’s no need of cleaning, disinfection, and storing them.
