Why Not Just Buy Drugstore Reading Glasses? | Long Island Eye Doctor

Dr. Joel Kestenbaum

As older adults start losing some of their ability to see close objects or text, it is because they are starting to realize the effects of the condition called presbyopia. When this occurs many hop into the car and head on down to the local drugstore for a pair of reading glasses.  Reading glasses from the drugstore are a “quick fix” and quite useful if you want to keep several pairs of glasses around the house for reading emergencies such as reading the print on the back of a prescription bottle, the directions on a cake mix or a can of paint.  But there are many advantages to a visit to the optometrist to get the right pair of eyeglasses made especially for you.

An eye exam done by a competent optometrist can confirm the self-diagnosis of presbyopia, or tell you what’s really causing your problems.  Are your eyes healthy?  There are many “silent” eye diseases that can mimic the signs of presbyopia.  So don’t be foolish in self-diagnosing.  Remember, insurance may cover not only the visit to your optometrist but the prescription eyeglasses as well.

If presbyopia is your problem, there are other things to take into consideration. Are you also farsighted, nearsighted, or astigmatic?  Any of these conditions may be complicated by presbyopia and will probably mean that it’s time for a whole new prescription for your eyeglasses and perhaps your sunglasses as well.

You will also be able to find a pair of eyeglasses that perfectly suits your needs at Optix Family Eyecare on Long Island.  If you have problems seeing distant objects, and now cannot see things close up, you may need bifocal or multifocals.  If you do a lot of work on a computer or on your desk, you may need trifocals, allowing for clear vision at distance, close up, and in-between.  And don’t let the idea of bifocals or trifocals make you nervous.  Most have no lines so it’s usually impossible to detect whether someone is wearing bifocals or trifocals today and, in fact, they can be quite a fashion statement!

When it’s time for that presbyopia vision test, visit our website http://www.optixeyecare.comto find out about making an appointment with the eye doctor at Optix Family Eyecare Center on Long Island.

We’ll check your eye health and figure out the right prescription for you.  We will then find you not only the perfect lenses, but the perfect pair of frames so that you’ll be seeing in style from now on. You’ll be surprised at how much more comfortable you’ll be when you’re not visually struggling.
